Optimal Local Estimates of Visual Motion in a Natural Environment

چکیده
Many organisms use visual signals to estimate motion, and these estimates typically are biased. Here, we ask whether biases may reflect physical rather than biological limitations. Using a camera-gyroscope system, sample the joint distribution of images rotational motions in natural environment, from this construct optimal estimator velocity based on local image intensities. Over most dynamic range, exhibits observed neural behavioral responses. Thus, imputed errors sensory processing represent an response sampled environment.

Local Analysis of Visual Motion
We inhabit an ever-changing environment, in which sensing, processing and acting upon these changes can be essential for survival. When we move or when objects in the world move, the visual images projected onto each of our retinas change accordingly. The psychologist J. J. Gibson noted that important environmental information is embedded in this pattern of local retinal image velocities (Gibso...
متن کاملOptimal Visual Motion Estimation: A Note
We analyze the problem of estimating 3-D motion in an optimal manner using correspondences of features in two views. The importance of having an optimal estimator is twofold: first, for the estimation itself and, second, for the bound it offers on how much sensitivity one can expect from a two-frame, point-based motion algorithm. The optimal estimator turns out to be nonlinear, and for that rea...
متن کاملOptimal Smoothing in Visual Motion Perception
When a flash is aligned with a moving object, subjects perceive the flash to lag behind the moving object. Two different models have been proposed to explain this "flash-lag" effect. In the motion extrapolation model, the visual system extrapolates the location of the moving object to counteract neural propagation delays, whereas in the latency difference model, it is hypothesized that moving o...
متن کاملLocal Optimization for Simulation of Natural Motion
Reinforcement Learning (Sutton and Barto 1998) is a theoretical framework for optimizing the behavior of artificial agents. The notion that behavior in the natural world is in some sense optimal is explored by areas such as biomechanics and physical anthropology. These fields propose a variety of candidate optimality criteria (?, e.g.,)]eng,cost as possible formulations of the principles underl...
متن کاملParameter Estimation from an Optimal Projection in a Local Environment
The parameter fit from a model grid is limited by our capability to reduce the number of models, taking into account the number of parameters and the non linear variation of the models with the parameters. The Local MultiLinear Regression (LMLR) algorithms allow one to fit linearly the data in a local environment. The MATISSE algorithm, developed in the context of the estimation of stellar para...
